The main cutback bitumen application is in the road construction. Cut back bitumen as a liquid bitumen doesn’t need to be heated before using, so it can be used easily in the cold regions.

Cut Back Bitumen Applications in Road Construction

Cold Asphalt:

Cold asphalt is a mixture of aggregates and liquid bitumen. This type of asphalt should be made in the ambient temperature. Both bitumen emulsion and cutback bitumen can be used in cold asphalt. The below grades of cut back bitumen are popular in the road construction:

  • SC250,SC800,SC3000
  • MC70,MC250,MC800,MC300
  • RC70,RC250,RC800,RC3000

Prime Coat:

Prime coat is directly applied on the base course of the flexible pavement in road construction. All three types of cutback bitumen including SC, MC and RC can be used in this layer.
The grades of cutback bitumen that can be used in the prime coat layer are MC30, SC70, MC70, RC 70, SC250, MC250, RC250.

Tack Coat:

Tack coat is a thin layer of cut back bitumen that binds two layers of asphalt. Its bottom asphalt layer is binder course which consists of bitumen penetration grade or viscosity bitumen and aggregates and the top asphalt layer is the surface asphalt layer.
It is recommended to use bitumen emulsion in tack coat but MC grade of cut back bitumen is usually used in this layer.

Spray Sealing:

On roads where the traffic is medium or light and the road is damaged, it is not necessary to asphalt the road again. In this situation, a cheaper surface treatment is spray sealing.
In the spray sealing, a thin film of cutback bitumen is sprayed on the road surface. This layer of cutback bitumen waterproofs the road and prevents the penetration of water into the bottom layer. Then stone aggregates should be poured on the cut back layer.

Other Applications of Cut Back Bitumen

Another cut back bitumen application is in pipeline coating.

Pipeline Coating:

In the oil and gas industry, the steel pipes should be coated with bitumen and fiberglass tape. This type of coating prevents the pipelines from corrosion and dust.
In this type of coating, a layer of cut back bitumen should be poured on the pipe. Then a layer of fiberglass tape will be placed on the bituminous coating. MC30 and MC70 are the best cut back bitumen that are used in the coating more than other grades.
