Iran to China Rail Freight for Bitumen via Aprin Dry Port

Iran-to-China rail freight is emerging as a practical alternative for moving high-volume bitumen shipments through an overland route connecting Iran, Central Asia and China.

Following a series of operational meetings, terminal reviews and an on-site inspection at Aprin Dry Port near Tehran, Infinity Galaxy has developed a structured logistics model for exporting Iranian bitumen by rail to the Xi'an freight hub in China.

The service is designed primarily for block-train volumes and containerized bitumen packed in 1 MT jumbo bags with steel cages.

Why Aprin Dry Port Matters for Iranian Bitumen Exports

Aprin Dry Port is in Islamshahr, southwest of Tehran, with direct access to Iran's national railway network. Its position near the capital links production areas in central Iran with the rail gateways serving Central Asia and China.

The terminal combines container yards, cargo-handling facilities, railway infrastructure and bonded logistics services. Aprin reports seven dedicated railway tracks and an annual handling capacity of about 200,000 TEU, with support for stuffing and stripping, yard operations, warehousing and rail preparation.

Infrastructure alone does not make a shipment work, though. The producer, exporter, customs broker, inland transporter, terminal operator, container provider and international rail forwarder all have to move in sequence. That coordination is Infinity Galaxy's main role.

Infinity Galaxy's On-Site Assessment at Aprin

Infinity Galaxy inspected the area designated for bitumen shipments at Aprin Dry Port. The yard is currently unpaved, but the surface is firm and compacted, and suitable for receiving properly packed bitumen cargo.

The inspection was meant to answer one practical question: can jumbo bags and steel cages be received, temporarily positioned and transferred into containers without an unacceptable risk of damage? Based on the site visit, the designated area suits approximately 1,400 MT of bitumen per operational round, roughly one 55-container block-train shipment, depending on the final payload per container.

How does the operation work?

Depending on the delivery model, terminal work can also include yard movements, container-acceptance formalities, representative attendance, optional SGS inspection, and fumigation when wooden pallets or dunnage are used.

Aprin Port Operational Model

Customs Procedure for Petroleum Bitumen

Petroleum bitumen normally falls under HS Code 271320.

Under the current operating structure, it is not simply delivered to Aprin for an initial export declaration. The export customs procedure is completed first at an authorized customs location, and the cargo then moves to Aprin under the applicable customs-transit procedure for terminal handling, container stuffing and rail dispatch.

Natural bitumen and natural asphalt under HS Code 271490 may follow a different process. Exporters must confirm the correct HS code, customs location and cargo-acceptance procedure before dispatch. Infinity Galaxy coordinates each shipment according to its actual product classification, not as if all bitumen were one customs commodity.

Three Handover Options in Iran

Infinity Galaxy can structure the commercial offer around three operating models. Option 2 is the one we recommend.

1. Delivery at the Tehran Refinery2. Truck-Side Delivery at Aprin (Recommended)3. Stuffed-Container Handover at Aprin
Infinity Galaxy handlesDelivery of the cargo at the nominated refineryAgreed Iran-side procedures, then transit-truck delivery to Aprin, ready to unload beside the buyer's containerMovement to Aprin, stuffing into the buyer's container, lining where required, loading and securing of jumbo bags

What it meansLowest Iran-side delivery price, with the most operational responsibility on the buyerA clear handover point; the buyer keeps control of its containers and its rail contractThe stuffed container is handed over at the agreed terminal point

The final quotation and Proforma Invoice will name the exact handover point, the included services and the applicable Incoterms rule

Container Booking Must Come Before Cargo Dispatch

The container is one of the most critical parts of the Iran-China rail operation. Before bitumen is sent to Aprin, the buyer or Infinity Galaxy must secure a booking with an approved rail forwarder that has suitable containers available for dispatch to China. The operating documents normally include:

  • Confirmed rail booking
  • Numbered container allocation
  • Container-acceptance letter
  • Container seal allocation
  • Terminal acceptance instructions
  • Daily container and cargo receiving list

Once these documents reach Aprin, the terminal schedules the operation. An initial coordination period of about three to four working days may be needed before daily cargo intake begins, and Aprin then sets the daily receiving capacity, for example about ten transit trucks per day, based on yard availability, equipment and workload.

Dispatching all trucks without a confirmed schedule creates waiting time, storage exposure and unnecessary demurrage.

What Terminal Operations Are Required?

The Aprin operation involves more than simply placing the cargo inside a container.

Depending on the selected delivery model, the terminal process can include:

  • Container positioning
  • Jumbo-bag stuffing
  • Protective container lining
  • Cargo lashing and securing
  • Yard movements
  • Container-acceptance formalities
  • Representative attendance
  • Container and seal verification
  • Preparation for wagon loading
  • Optional SGS inspection
  • Fumigation when wooden pallets or wooden dunnage are used

These services are calculated according to the final operational scope.

SGS inspection can be arranged at Aprin when requested by the buyer. The inspection scope and cost are quoted separately. Where wooden packaging materials are used, fumigation and the required certification may also create an additional charge.

Indicative Iran-Side Cost Items

Beyond the cargo price itself, the Iran-side cost depends on the handover model you choose and on four main items:

  • Aprin terminal handling: stuffing, lashing, container lining and representative acceptance support, depending on the final scope.
  • Transit trucking to Aprin under the applicable customs-transit procedure.
  • SGS inspection, optional and quoted separately when requested.
  • Fumigation and certification, only when wooden pallets or dunnage need treatment.

These are operational items, not a standing tariff. Currency, terminal rules, payload per container, inspection scope and booking conditions all move the final number, and each is reconfirmed before a firm quotation is issued. That is why we do not publish a price list on this page.

Who Pays Demurrage and Storage Charges?

The buyer or its nominated forwarder must make sure containers and the rail plan are available within the agreed operating window. Unless the final contract says otherwise, container detention, demurrage, yard storage and waiting charges arising after the agreed handover point are for the buyer's account.

This matters most when loaded containers are ready at Aprin but the block train has no departure plan yet. For that reason Infinity Galaxy confirms the operational cut-off and the handover evidence for each shipment, so responsibility is never unclear once the cargo has been delivered.

Iran to China Rail Route and Distance

The rail corridor connects Iran with China through Central Asia. Depending on the confirmed rail plan, border availability and forwarder arrangement, trains may move through Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan before entering China.

Historical Iran-China container services have covered approximately 10,400 kilometres between eastern China and the Tehran area. The precise distance between Aprin and Xi'an depends on the selected border crossing and railway routing.

For commercial planning, the route should therefore be treated as an approximately 10,000-kilometre Eurasian rail corridor rather than a single fixed railway line.

The route also involves different railway gauges. Iran and China use standard gauge, while sections of the Central Asian railway network use broad gauge. Container transfers, bogie operations and border formalities can consequently influence the final transit time.

Iran to China Rail Corridor

How Long Does Rail Freight from Tehran to Xi'an Take?

Published corridor benchmarks can indicate approximately 14-20 days for the pure rail movement between Xi'an and Aprin under efficient operating conditions.

For actual bitumen export planning, Infinity Galaxy recommends allowing approximately 25-35 days. This more conservative window accounts for:

  • Block-train formation
  • Train-slot allocation
  • Border congestion
  • Customs and document checks
  • Container transfers between railway gauges
  • Railway operating conditions in transit countries
  • Seasonal traffic and export volumes

The transit estimate begins only after the shipment has entered the confirmed rail operation. Time required for production, customs clearance, delivery to Aprin and assembly of the complete block train must be planned separately.

Rail transit time is therefore an operational estimate, not an unconditional delivery guarantee.

Why Use Rail Freight for Bitumen Exports to China?

Rail does not replace sea freight for every bitumen shipment. Sea transport can remain more economical for certain ports, volumes and supply structures. Rail becomes strategically relevant when the buyer needs something the sea route cannot easily provide:

If you need…What rail offers
An alternative to congested or disrupted maritime routesA second logistics channel when the sea route is under pressure
Less reliance on ports and vessel schedulesDeparture planned around the train slot rather than a vessel call
A land-based route into ChinaAn overland corridor through Central Asia
To move a large volume in one goAn entire high-volume shipment as one block train
More control over containersContainer allocation controlled by the buyer or its forwarder
A gateway inland in ChinaAccess to the Xi'an logistics hub
A more resilient supply chainRoute diversification alongside existing sea supply

The value of rail, then, is not only freight cost. It is an additional channel for continuity when route diversification matters.

Bitumen Grades Available for Rail Export

Infinity Galaxy can quote the following grades for rail shipment:

The standard packing configuration is a 1 MT jumbo bag placed inside a steel cage.

The exact grade, specification, refinery, quantity per container and inspection requirement must be confirmed before a firm quotation is issued.

Information Required for a Rail Bitumen Quotation

To receive an executable quotation, buyers should provide:

1. Required bitumen grade

2. Total required quantity

3. Preferred handover point in Iran

4. Target price in USD per MT at that Iranian handover point

5. Confirmation of access to 40' HC containers

6. Name of the nominated rail forwarder

7. Expected shipment date

8. SGS inspection requirement, if any

9. Final rail destination in China

10. Whether onward transport from Xi'an is required

A complete answer allows Infinity Galaxy to confirm refinery availability, customs routing, trucking, terminal handling and the booking sequence before issuing the final offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much bitumen can be loaded in each container?

The expected net cargo is approximately 24-25 MT per 40' HC container. The final quantity depends on the actual tare weight of the container, steel-cage weight and railway gross-weight limit.

Is rail freight to Xi'an included in the bitumen price?

It depends on the requested quotation. Infinity Galaxy can quote different Iran-side handover models. International rail freight is included only when expressly stated in the final offer.

Is petroleum bitumen cleared directly at Aprin?

Petroleum bitumen under HS Code 271320 is generally cleared at an authorized customs location and then transferred to Aprin under customs transit for stuffing and rail preparation. The current customs procedure must be reconfirmed before every shipment.

Request an Iran-China Rail Bitumen Offer

Rail shipment of bitumen is not simply a matter of purchasing cargo and booking a train. Container availability, customs transit, terminal acceptance, daily truck dispatch, stuffing, lashing, inspection, train formation and border operations must work as one coordinated system.

Infinity Galaxy has reviewed this process directly with Aprin Dry Port and inspected the designated bitumen-handling area.

Buyers planning a block-train purchase can contact Infinity Galaxy with their required grade, quantity, preferred Iran-side handover model and target price.

Our team will evaluate the complete operating structure before issuing a firm and executable quotation.
